Formed in 2014, UTM Students for Life is the University of Toronto Mississauga’s sole organization dedicated to the advocacy of the right to life for all human beings from conception to natural death. In its efforts to make abortion unthinkable on their campus, UTM Students for Life also provides support for those who have had abortions or are facing crisis pregnancies.
In its efforts to help the vulnerable on our campus, however, UTM Students for Life has been censored. In August 2015, the organization was denied club status and the right to exercise free speech by their student union. In January 2016, after months of fruitless efforts at reconciliation, UTM Students for Life decided to enter into a lawsuit against their student union, citing violation of their Charter rights. The case has yet to be resolved.
Now in its third year of operation, UTM Students for Life continues to take the case for human rights for all human beings outside of the classroom, seeking to change hearts and minds on the greatest human rights violation of our time.
